Different Types of Chinese Visas

There are eight types of ordinary Chinese visas, each marked by a letter of the alphabet. Deciding which visa you will need is one of the first things you need to do so pay attention! Rules can change at any moment and some visas might suddenly become more difficult to get ahold of.

L - Tourist Visa

F - Business Visa

This visa is for anyone who has been invited to China for a business visa, to do research, hold a lecture, or for scientific and cultural exchanges.

Z - Work Visa

The Z visa is issued to anyone who comes to China to work.

X - Student Visa

The student visa is issued to anyone coming to China to study for a period of six months or more.

D - Residence Visa

This is issued to any foreigner who are going to live in China permanently.

G - Transit Visa

This visa is for anyone who plans to pass through China with no intention of staying. It allows a transit time of xx days.

J - Journalist Visa

Issued to journalists.

C - Crewmember Visa

This visa is issued to people who are working in international aviation, navigation and land transportation.
